Conservative Group Leader Calls For Road Closure To Be Lifted For Memorial Services

Conservative group leader Tony Freebody is asking the borough council to ensure a road closure is lifted so that local people can attend an Armistice Day service at Butts Brow.

Butt’s Lane is due to close on November 5th for one week for tree felling work due to ash dieback but if it remains cordoned off then those wanting to honour the 10 US aircrew who died when their aircraft ‘Ruth-less’ crashed in fog into Butts Brow in 1944 will find it almost impossible to get there on 11th November.

“It’s both respectful and sobering to remember all of those who have their lives so that we can enjoy the freedom we have today and nothing should be allowed to get in the way of local people honouring those airmen,” said Tony.

“I’m asking the borough council to be flexible about this and make sure there is a way for everyone who wants to pay their respects to get to the site.”
