The highs, and lows, of proposals to safeguard Eastbourne from the terrors of flooding

Seafront protection timescales are the subject for Robert Smart's latest column for Eastbourne's weekly newspaper. The leader of the opposition Conservative group on Eastbourne Borough Council says that "timescales can be squeezed if there is adequate will".

Meanwhile, he maintains that "Eastbourne Borough Council cannot (and should not) defer decisions on our important seafront assets until this proposal is completed in 2025".

A consultation is underway into a £100m flood-defence scheme to protect homes on the East Sussex coast. The Environment Agency says the Eastbourne to Pevensey Bay scheme will "better protect 10,000 homes and businesses from flooding".
