The phone box outside The Old Willingdon Post Office has long been used by local residents as a community library, providing a small but valuable space to share books.
Although most red phone boxes are rarely used for their original purpose these days and are in decline across the UK, this one has become well used by people in the area.
Ratton councillors David, Nick and Colin, were made aware that BT had withdrawn phone services from this phonebox, meaning it was locked and taken out of public use.
They knew this was a concern for many residents who value it as a mini-library.
Cllr David Small got in touch with BT and with the help of Eastbourne Council’s property department, were able to arrange for the Council to take ownership of the phone box for the grand total of £1.
The box is now unlocked and residents are once again welcome to borrow books or donate any they no longer need.
If you live nearby and have spare books or are looking for something new to read, please do pay the phone box a visit and make good use of it.
