Cllr Robert Smart

At a presentation this week, the Environment Agency presented its long-awaited proposals for Eastbourne’s sea defences.

Attended by all Conservative Eastbourne Borough Councillors, the presentation outlined proposals for Phase One of this 100-year project, for the first 10 years from 2027 to 2037.

Leader of the Conservative Group, Councillor Robert Smart, commented during the presentation that as he predicted two- years ago, there will be no major hard infrastructure changes during this period.

Reference was made specifically to the iconic bandstand which will be maintained and protected throughout.

Councillor Smart comments: “The scare stories about the Bandstand were just that; used as a justification for its closing and delaying the necessary repairs.” These led to the attraction losing the coveted title of Britain’s Busiest Bandstand.

Councillor Smart adds: “I was pleased that the proposals made reference to the exciting ‘Blue Eden’ project which is at a preliminary stage of development.”

The Environment Agency confirmed that it will be making further such presentations and intends to sort out its outline business case in summer 2024.
