Conservative councillors in Eastbourne support selective 20 mph speed limits

Eastbourne’s Conservative councillors Robert Smart and Nigel Goodyear attended last week's Sustainable Transport and Active Travel Summit organised by the Eastbourne Eco Action Network.

Councillor Smart says that “probably the most frequent and tangible actions discussed were 20mph speed limits”.

He reminds residents and activists that the Conservative group of Eastbourne councillors supported a motion to consider 20mph speed limits in February 2022. It included the proposal that “Eastbourne Borough Council form a cross-party group (with Officer support) to consider the areas and zones which would benefit from adopting a “20 is Plenty” speed limit.”

The Lib Dem Administration has failed to take this forward over the past 21 months, but simply blames ESCC for rejecting a Borough-wide proposal.

Councillor Nigel Goodyear adds: “The Lib Dems are very good at grandstanding but we have stood ready to work together on this important issue, and still do.”

The summit was opened and closed by Eastbourne's Conservative MP, Caroline Ansell.
